Earlier this term, students participated in an excursion to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens to observe a range of plants used by Indigenous Australians. Some plants are useful in the way they can be made into items such as baskets and mats, while other plants provide an important source of food. Students particularly enjoyed learning about the bottle tree, named for its bottle shape. It can hold large amounts of water during hot dry periods and was a useful source of water for indigenous people. Other plants included a Morten Bay fig tree used to make fig cakes and a 280-year-old Red Gum.

Following a busy morning, students then attended a performance at the Adelaide Festival Theatre called ‘Zooom.’ The performance was based on the picture book Harold and the Purple Crayon. The energy levels were high as students responded authentically to an interactive performance of music and light. Comments such as “this is magical,” demonstrated the level of enjoyment experienced by all. We thank the wonderful volunteers who supported us on the day.
